Which fertiliser should I use?
The following information is essential when selecting an appropriate fertiliser for a particular crop.
The major nutrients required by plants are nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and they need to be absorbed by plant roots in relatively large quantities to ensure healthy plant growth. These nutrients can become deficient most commonly in gardens and if this happens, or is likely to happen, fertilisers can be used to add more of these nutrients to the soil.
Fertiliser packaging provides information on the individual levels of major nutrients provided by the product and this is shown as an NPK rating. You may find it useful to know the following:
N - Nitrogen - encourages vegetative growth, particularly stems, shoots and foliage
P - Phospherus - is important for good root development and the ripening of fruit
K - Potassium - is essential for the promotion of flowering and fruit formation
There may also be additional ratings for secondary nutrients, ie magnesium, calcium and sulphur and trace elements, ie iron, copper etc.
