Conifers and Heathers
Conifers
There are conifers suitable for containers, rock gardens, borders, hedging and lawn specimens. The interest in conifers is steadily increasing and new varieties continue to appear each season. There are a selection of shapes and forms available ranging from a cone or spreading sheet of foliage which can be blue, grey, yellow, bronze or just plain green. You can find lime haters, such as Cryptomeria, Pinus and Taxodium or varieties which are happy in chalky soils, like some Junipers and Pines.

Heathers
Calluna is the common variety of heather which is found on our northern and western moors and it has given rise to hundreds of named varieties which bloom in later summer. A large number have coloured foliage - golden, silvery, bronze and red with flowers in white, pink or purple. All like hungry, lime-free soil and sunshine.
Ericas range from a height of a few inches to 10ft or more and can be used in the rockery, as ground cover or as a specimen shrub. Some can be grown in chalky soil, and by choosing carefully you can have a heather bed which is in bloom all year round.
