Your Garden - August
If you are not sure what jobs you could be doing in your garden in August, here are a few suggestions:

Kitchen Garden
  • Cut out raspberry canes at ground level after harvesting
  • Pick early apples as soon as they will release easily
  • Support heavily laden branches of plums
  • Summer prune wall trained fruit trees
  • Pinch out side shoots from tomatoes and remove a few leaves to help fruit ripen
  • Dry off shallots
  • Feed marrows and courgettes once a week with a liquid fertiliser

Flower Garden
  • Plant Colchicums, autumn flowering crocus and hardy cyclamen
  • Clip yew and other hedges
  • Water hanging baskets daily and feed once a week
  • Spray roses to control pests and diseases with Roseclear
  • Prune rambling roses after flowering
  • Sow hardy primulas outdoors in moist ground

Lawns

  • Mow lawns weekly raising cutting height in dry weather
  • Apply a selective weedkiller like Verdone if weeds are taking hold
  • Prepare ground to be sown with grass seed
  • If laying turf ensure that it does not dry out

Gardening will be very much dependent on the weather in your area with the timings given as a guide only.
