Your Garden - February

If you are not sure what jobs you could be doing in your garden in February, here are a few suggestions:

Kitchen Garden
  • Sow early crops in your coldframe, ie radishes and turnips seeds
  • Prepare bean and celery trenches
  • Apply slow-acting fertilisers such as bonemeal to your vegetable plot
  • Start chitting seed potatoes for early varieties - seasonal products
  • Start sowing appropriate vegetables in the heated greenhouse

Flower Garden
  • Take dahlia cuttings from tubers
  • Sow bedding plants in seed trays in heated greenhouse or on windowsill - seeds
  • Start pricking out early sown bedding plants
  • Ensure greenhouse glass is clean so that plants receive plenty of light
  • Tidy up rock gardens and apply fresh chippings (decorative aggregrates) where necessary
  • Start killing perennial weeds on paths and driveways - plant care

Lawns
  • Brush off wormcasts
  • Now is the time to treat moss in the lawn with an appropriate mosskiller such as lawn sand.
  • Lay turf in mild areas providing the ground is not frozen or waterlogged

Wildlife Garden

  • Clean bird boxes and bird tables
  • Attract wildlife to your garden by adding nesting boxes

Gardening will be very much dependent on the weather in your area with the timings given as a guide only.
